The “Red Salmon” of the Kenai legendary! With 3 separate runs of Sockeye Salmon in the Kenai RIver (the “Blueback” run in May, “early” run in June and the main run in mid to late July and early August) totalling nearly a million individuals, the Sockeye, or “Reds” are truly a crowd-pleaser.
Sockeye Salmon are the true “engine that powers the Kenai Ecosystem” The return of the Reds” has been celebrated since the times of the First Peoples, who’ve used the confluence of the Moose and Kenai Rivers as their summer Salmon camp since time immemorial.
By returning each year the sockeye help the native rainbow trout population to thrive, along with Bald Eagles, Brown and Black Bear and of course humans as well. Scientific studies show the protein DNA of the sockeye (and other salmon) as registering in leaves near the tops of trees 30 feet away from the riverbank. That’s how important that protein source is to the environment!.
Because the Sockeye is such a healthy population, it plays a big role in folks bringing home fish! Not only do we retain fish on daily charters, but we can also fish in the evenings after dinner as well. Of course you can’t take a second limit, but if you didn’t fish for Sockeye during the day (If you fished kings, or offshore Halibut, or even hiked or Mountain biked) then you can try your hand that night to catch a few for the freezer back home that night. When they are really running, it’s truly amazing.
